MacBook fan RPM vs percent
RPM and percent are not the same fan speed number. RPM is the physical fan rotation rate, while percent is a relative reading inside the detected minimum and maximum fan range.
RPM is the actual rotation speed
RPM means revolutions per minute. A reading like 2500 RPM describes the fan's physical speed directly, which makes it useful when comparing with another utility or entering a precise fan curve point.
Percent is easier to scan
The same 2500 RPM can mean different things when one fan tops out near 5000 RPM and another tops out higher. Percent display translates the detected range into a quick status reading, which is easier to scan in the menu bar.
Use both when tuning
- Percent is better for quick menu bar status.
- RPM is better for precise curve editing.
- The same percent can map to different RPM values on different hardware.
- Temperature distribution helps avoid raising fan speed more than your workload needs.
