Why your MacBook Pro fan keeps running and what to check first
A fan that keeps running is not always a hardware fault. Sustained workload, warm rooms, background tasks, and fan curve settings can all keep the fan active.
Check workload first
Video exports, app builds, games, calls, and heavy browser sessions can hold CPU or GPU load. Activity Monitor can show whether one process is keeping the Mac busy long enough for the fan to stay up.
Distribution matters more than one reading
A short temperature spike is normal. A cluster of high readings means the fan may keep running. FanCurve Mac shows recent temperature distribution in the curve editor so you can tune around real use instead of one moment.
Your fan curve may be too aggressive
A curve that asks for high RPM at low temperature can keep the Mac noisy even when it could be quiet. It is usually easier to release low-temperature behavior back to macOS and reserve stronger fan targets for higher temperatures.
A practical check order
- Open Activity Monitor and check for sustained CPU or GPU load.
- Look at recent temperature distribution instead of one sample.
- Check whether the low-temperature part of the curve is too high.
- Confirm that quitting the app returns control to macOS fan control.
